Short Story

Cancer, quadriplegia, treatments, surgical procedures, unbearable medical bills!
A family which is basically living in a rehabilitation center for so long, they don’t even know what home is anymore.
Time, money, effort… a lot of sacrifices made for Ilias’ rehabilitation.
He has been battling cancer for years. He is one of the most admirable patients in the rehabilitation center where he is being treated. He is an exemplary student, full of dreams regarding his professional development, since he wanted to become a teacher ever since he was a little kid.
We can help him fulfill his hopes and dreams, simply by supporting the aid campaign that is being currently active by our Organization.
Today, Ilias needs our help. We need your help, in order to settle the cost of his 4-month-stay at the rehabilitation center, which hasn’t been paid yet. Let us lift some weight off Ilias and his family’s shoulders, so that he can concentrate on his recovery.

We keep on fighting for Ilias, the 22-year-old young man, who became quadriplegic after a long battle with cancer!

Campaign Story

Ilias has been battling cancer ever since he was 10 years old, when he got diagnosed with 4th grade glioblastoma (malignant brain tumor). After a series of painful treatments and a surgical resection of the tumor, Ilias managed to beat cancer. However, when he reached the age of 18, he was diagnosed with an aggressive, primary cancer on his cervical spine. After numerous treatments and surgical procedures Ilias became quadriplegic and has been confined to a bed ever since.

That’s when his family reached out to us and thanks to the defining contribution of thousands of people from Greece, but also abroad, we managed to provide Ilias with an intensive, home-based physiotherapy plan, as well as with all the required medical expendables for a period of 6 months. Following doctors’ recommendation, Ilias was recently admitted to a specialized rehabilitation center in the city of Larissa, where he is being subjected to an intensive physiotherapy plan that will help him strengthen all muscle groups and regain his motor skills. We have already settled the cost of his hospitalization for the first 3 months, and so far his condition has shown great improvement. According to the center’s physicians, Ilias must proceed with his treatments for a minimum of 8 months. However, the family’s health insurance won’t cover his hospitalization any further and after all these years, his family is experiencing financial hardship and is unable to cover the unbearable cost of his treatments.

Ilias will be able to complete his treatment plan, only if we join forces and stand by his side! Ilias has been struggling for so long, hoping that he will soon get back on his feet. He is only a breath away from making his dreams come true. Let us all support this fighter’s struggle and offer him a chance to complete his treatments and get his life back!

He needs you in order to get his life back!

Ilias is making an appearance in front of the camera for the first time, in an effort to communicate with all of you, who have been supporting him for the past year! In the following video, he is describing his health journey, while sending his own life message. He was just 10 years old when cancer knocked on his door for the first time and 18 years old when it reappeared. We daily communicate with the people that we support. However, there are times when all of us feel extremely overwhelmed by contacting them. After standing by his side for one whole year, thanks to your defining support, Ilias is finally opening his heart, describing the ordeal he has been facing all of these years, while focusing at the same time on his dreams for the future! Today, one year later, he is still being subjected to an intensive physiotherapy program, in the ANIMUS rehabilitation center in the city of Larissa. His goal is to graduate and to be able one day to offer his support to people in need, just like all these people have helped him.

Ilias’ wish is the definition of solidarity.

Ilias was just 10 years old when he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Glioblastoma type 4. Ilias fights hard and wins the battle. Years go by. He was a freshman in the School of Primary Education, at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, when cancer knocked on his door for the second time. This time, more aggressive. This time, on his spine. Ilias has to fight one more time. However, the surgeries and treatments render him quadriplegic, confined to a bed. During his exam period, he is being subjected to chemo, so he is taking his exams, while being hospitalized. Ever since he was a kid, he wanted to become a teacher and he is not willing to give up on his dreams. He wants to get his life back. And that is feasible. If he proceeds with his treatment program, which is essential for his overall health improvement, Ilias will eventually be able to walk and to go after his dreams.

We visited Ilias at the rehabilitation center, and we were astounded by his will power. In the text below, Ilias is pouring out his sole, describing his life story:

“Good afternoon. My name is Ilias. I’m 22 years old. Since the age of 10, I’ve been facing a lot of health problems. Every day is a struggle. I have received support from so many people and that has given me strength in my darkest hours. I keep on fighting for the best possible outcome. I keep on fighting in order to make my dreams come true. I’m a student at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Currently, I’ve taken some time off, because realistically I’m not able to attend classes. However, I keep on fighting so that one day I’ll be able to go back to school, get my diploma, and help people with my skills and knowledge, the same way they have helped me. During all of these years, I’ve been facing a lot of challenges. However, Act of Kindness showed me that there are many people out there, who care for their fellow citizens. And that gave me hope, in order to keep on fighting and to try my best.”

“Ilias has been hospitalized here since last summer, last August. We are all very impressed by his determination, by the effort he is making. He is daily struggling in order to get his life back. He has been struggling since the age of 10. He has been through multiple surgeries, health complications, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, treatments abroad, rehabilitation centers… life hasn’t been easy for him. He never took anything for granted. He has been fighting since he was just a kid, in order to survive. When he first came here, he had a tracheostomy. He wasn’t able to get out of bed. Today he is able to breathe without the tracheostomy. However, he still has the tube as a precautionary measure. He is still being subjected to immunotherapy, under the guidance of our oncologist, who works in the Kianos Stavros clinic, and so far he is doing well. He is in remission. He and his physicians are doing the best they can, in order for him to regain his motor skills. Ever since he came here, his condition has been gradually improving. And not just regarding his motor skills. He has come a long way, regarding his studies. He is very active when it comes to technology. To social media. He is very outgoing.”

“The message I want to send to all of the people out there, is that we must never give up. We all go through difficulties. Difficulties, which are painful and which take a great toll on us. However, we owe it to ourselves to keep on trying for the best. Life is a constant struggle. Good times result from the hard times. Even though, I’m going through hard times, I always picture myself standing, and I hope that one day I’ll make it happen. I keep on fighting in order to survive, and to live the life I dream of. And I hope that my story will inspire a lot of people.”

“We are trying to offer him the best possible treatments, in order to provide the best possible outcome. However, his cancer is making everything harder, so there is a limit to what we can achieve. Bust since he is gradually improving, he must proceed with the treatments, until we can reach the best possible outcome. Act of Kindness’ support has been essential for Ilias’ effort. Because, as you can imagine, being hospitalized in a rehabilitation center, takes a great financial toll on the family. All of these months, Act of Kindness is supporting Ilias’ family, as well as Ilias himself, in order for him to remain in our rehabilitation center and to keep on fighting, while having at the same time, the support of us all.”

“The truth is that they gave me a lot of hope, because when we had returned from the hospital, we had a hard time adjusting. I mean, let’s be realistic. When you are experiencing health problems and when you are being subjected to surgeries, it’s difficult to reintegrate into society. This is why, when you realize that there are people who are willing to help you, that gives you hope. That gives you a motive to carry on. I would like to thank all of the people who got to know me through Act of Kindness. I believe that it’s really rewarding to be in a workplace that allows you to help people. You attract positive energy and that’s really significant. And to be honest, this is exactly what I’m planning to do with my future so that I’ll be able to reciprocate some of the support I have received.”

Today it’s Ilias, the one who is suffering. Tomorrow, it could be me, you, somebody else out there. Let us all join forces and help him. Life is beautiful. Let us all share it with one another.

She is fighting for her child.

There is nothing more powerful that a mother’s will, when she is fighting for her child! Ilias’ mother is calling for help! Ilias’ condition is gradually improving, while he can now stand with the help of a robotic exoskeleton.
He needs, however, to remain in the rehabilitation center for just a few more months, in order to stand on his own.
This changes the aid campaign’s objective, therefore our funding goal will be readjusting from 72.446 € to 108.700 €, so that we can help Ilias get to the finish line.
This time, standing! Ilias has asked us to thank you one more time for your support! We need you more than ever. Ilias’ life can in fact change, if we all work as a team! If we stand by him to the very end.

All of these years, he has been faced with hospitalizations, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and numerous surgical procedures to his spine, which rendered him quadriplegic and unable to fend for himself. However, he is not giving up. His goal is to get out of the wheelchair and proceed with his studies at the Department of Primary Education of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
To this day, we have managed to settle a great part of his stay at the rehabilitation center, while according to the center’s medical staff, Ilias’ condition has shown great improvement, since he has already removed the tracheostomy, while he has partially regained his motor skills. However, Ilias still has a long way ahead of him and quitting now would be disastrous.
Let us all support this true fighter’s struggle and offer him the chance to get back on his feet and to achieve his goals and dreams! Any small gesture can make a great difference!

We have managed to ensure his stay at the rehabilitation center for two more months!

We kindly thank you for your immediate response after his mother’s public appeal! We’ll keep on fighting, so that he’ll be able to complete his rehabilitation program, with the use of robotic equipment.
He keeps fighting, he keeps needing us!

Ilias has made progress, but not enough to stop fighting. The goal is to stand upright. The medical staff of the Rehabilitation Center talks about a young man with stubbornness, full of zest for life, dreams for his studies and the future, an endless source of effort!
The cancer came into his life and passed, leaving him with quadriplegia. Numerous spinal surgeries deprive him of the ability to care for himself, a skill he struggles to recover daily.
He has managed to stand upright with mechanical support.
All he asks is that we help him secure his stay in the Rehabilitation Center so that he can continue to fight!
The dignity of young Elias impresses all members of our Organization on every visit to the Center where he is located.
With you by our side we will be able to ensure his stay there for as many months as he needs it.
We stay united! We will make it!
