Campaign Story

Vaggelis is 43 years old and he is suffering from type II diabetes and lumbar radiculopathy. When Vaggelis was younger, he started to experience numbness of the lower extremities, instable walking and vision problems. He then sought medical attention and after a series of tests, he was diagnosed with type II diabetes. Vaggelis immediately began to take the prescribed medication, since however he wasn’t diagnosed early on, his nervous system suffered permanent damage. Years went by, and Vaggelis had adjusted to this new reality. He had changed his eating habits, he was receiving his medication, and in spite of the neurological disorders he had been facing, he was still going to work as usual, while taking care of his mother, who was experiencing severe health problems. Since his mother was unable to fend for herself, he had to lift her out of bed, and after all these years, he eventually developed lumbar radiculopathy, as well as a spinal herniated disc, for which he was subjected to surgery about a year ago. The first months after the surgery, the symptoms had subsided, however a few months ago he started to experience the same symptoms as before.

Today, Vaggelis is unable to walk or go up and down the stairs, while he has to receive painkillers, since the back pain has deteriorated. According to the doctor who monitors his condition, it’s imperative that he proceeds with his physiotherapy sessions, however he is unable to cope with the cost of his treatments and now he can’t even cover his living expenses. Vaggelis is going through tough times and he needs us by his side. We cannot turn our backs on him. Let us all join forces and facilitate his daily struggle, with just one small gesture!

    Vaggelis needs our support… Today!

Vaggelis is breaking his silence, recounting the ordeal he has been daily experiencing during these last few years. The 43-year-old man is suffering from type II diabetes and lumbar radiculopathy. All of these years, Vaggelis has been watching his diet and taking his medication, while working a full time job and taking care of his mother. Since his mother was unable to fend for herself, he had to lift her out of bed. As a result, he eventually developed lumbar radiculopathy, as well as a spinal herniated disc, for which he was subjected to surgery about a year ago. Due to the lack of a support system in his life, and due to the fact that he is suffering from a variety of health problems, he is having trouble recovering.
Today, Vaggelis is unable to walk or go up and down the stairs, while according to the doctor who monitors his condition, it’s imperative that he proceeds with his physiotherapy sessions. Unfortunately, Vaggelis is unable to cope with the cost of his treatments, since he has now come to the point where he can’t even cover the cost of his living expenses.
Vaggelis is going through tough times and he needs us by his side. We cannot turn our backs on him. Let us all join forces and facilitate his daily struggle, with just one small gesture!

“Good afternoon. My name is Vaggelis. I’m 43 years old. For the last three years, I’ve been struggling. I don’t have any family to help me financially or otherwise. In the past, I had suffered a severe spinal injury. I have a 67% disability rating. My right leg isn’t working properly. I have an L5 radiculopathy, which means that my leg is numb from the thigh down to my foot. During the first wave of the pandemic, my mother got infected. She was already confined to the bed, suffering from Alzheimer’s. I don’t have any siblings, neither did my mother. I had to quit my job in order to take care of her. I have worked in big companies, in the field of marketing and sales. So I had to quit my job in order to take care of her. I had to help her get out of bed, or else she would fall. People don’t know much about Alzheimer’s. They believe that it’s a disease that only affects the memory, which isn’t the case. It causes degeneration of the entire nervous system. I had to look after her on a daily basis for a long period of time. At some point I developed a large hernia in my spine. At first I didn’t realize it, because I was focused on taking care of my mother. I was in pain, but I didn’t think much of it. At some point, the capsule of the disc cracked, so the nucleus was pushed out of the annulus. When that happened, I lost my ability to walk. That was almost 8 months ago. That happened last year. So, it was 9 months ago. Recently, I have begun to take small steps. My right leg is totally paralyzed. My left is partially paralyzed. Thanks to some acquaintances, I had the opportunity to be subjected to surgery on my spine, in a public hospital. However, the surgery didn’t work and the hernia got worse. I’ll probably require another surgery in order to fix the damage, as well as a lot of physiotherapy sessions, in order to become somewhat functional. I really need help around the house, someone to cook for me, to go get my medicine. I can’t even take out the trash. It’s too hard for me to cook. I can only order take-out, but at the same time I have to watch my diet due to my diabetes. My medications cost a lot. Especially the ones that are prescribed by my neurologist. Ever since I was little, I was self-sufficient. I have lost my father to diabetes. My mother had severe neurological problems. My goal is to get strong and to get my life back. To improve my physical and mental health and to get back on my feet. Because, every person who experiences a disability, is experiencing at the same time, psychological problems, social isolation, financial issues and a ton of other things that result from that. I was lucky to have found Act of Kindness. I saw that they were dealing with some cases more severe than others. I was really moved by the people’s sensitivity and support. What I really ask of them is just to give me a chance. Because people with disabilities, such as myself, aren’t responsible for what is happening to them, and they have the right to a fair chance and to be treated with dignity. I’m at an age where I should be productive, however I don’t have anybody to help me. I’m still young for retirement and I don’t have a support system in my life. I want to become more active, even when I’m inside the house. I want to regain my motor skills. Obviously, I am experiencing severe financial difficulties. I’m daily struggling to fend for myself. To move around the house. Through this video, I would like to thank Act of Kindness, as well as all of the people out there who want to give a helping hand. Trust me, any contribution is appreciated. Because every contribution provides a sense of hope. It proves that there are people who care about you. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I hope that you’ll be able to understand where I’m coming from.”
