Campaign Story

The 28-year-old student is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMA), a severe neurological disease that leads to gradual weakness and atrophy of the muscles, which destroys the patient’s motor skills. For the last three years, Areti hasn’t been able to get out of bed, since her condition has rapidly deteriorated, while she is also experiencing difficulty breathing, therefore she now requires the presence of a care-giver 24 hours a day. In spite of all the socio-economic challenges she is daily facing, as well as the lack of a supporting family environment, Areti has managed to complete her studies in Phycology, while she is currently studying for her master’s degree in Sociology. Areti is already being subjected to an innovative treatment. However, in order for her condition to improve, she must be also subjected to an intensive physiotherapy program. According to her: “My end goal is to be able to get out of bed and to use my wheelchair, so that I can be able to perform activities of daily living with dignity”. Her only chance to a better quality of life is her transfer to a specialized Rehabilitation Center, where she will be subjected to an intensive treatment plan, while receiving all the care that she needs. However, her health insurance won’t cover the unbearable costs for her hospitalization, which she cannot possibly afford without our contribution. Besides, as she already stated: “I truly believe in the concept of solidarity. In order to achieve major changes in society, we need many different voices, just like a polyphonic choir does”.

Let us all join our voices and support Christina-Areti’s struggle for a life filled with dignity. Together, we can make it happen!
