Campaign Story
12-year-old Antonis was a perfectly healthy, energetic kid. His life however turned upside down in the worst way possible, when he developed high fever 4 years ago. Since his fever wouldn’t subside and since he started to complain about intense headaches, his parents rushed him to the hospital. When they got there however, the little guy had an epileptic seizure, and he was immediately transferred to the PICU. As months went by, his health kept on deteriorating. He was soon confined to the bed, unable to speak or move his extremities. His parents were desperately looking for an answer, while trying at the same time to stand by their child, who couldn’t understand what was happening to him. Antonis revisited the hospital, where he was subjected to the standard tests. This time however, the results revealed extensive and permanent brain damage. Antonis was diagnosed with FIRES syndrome, an illness which manifests itself after a febrile infection and which causes epileptic seizures and brain atrophy.
Over the past 4 years, Antonis has been hospitalized in the PICU numerous times. Even though he has been subjected to a craniectomy, he is still suffering from epileptic seizures. Today, he is confined to the bed, unable to move his extremities or fend for himself. He has a tracheostomy and a gastrostomy on a permanent basis, while he is breathing through a ventilator.
As we can all understand, little Antonis’ health-related expenses are immense. The little guy is regularly subjected to physiotherapy, so that he is not in pain from the stiffness of his joints and the atrophy of his muscles, while he requires a variety of medical and medicinal expendable supplies, which are essential for his survival. Since Antonis’ mother had to leave her job in order to care for her son on a 24 hour basis, his family is unable to cope with his ever-increasing, health-related expenses.
Antonis’ parents had contacted the Organization a few years back, and thanks to your defining support and your humanity, we managed to cover the child’s medical needs for two whole years! Today, they need us once again. So let us all join forces and offer our help to this family, who have been facing an uphill struggle for the past 4 years of their lives! Any small gesture can make a great difference!
