Campaign Story
Dimitris had always been an energetic and healthy little boy. His life however, turned upside down, when at the age of 8, he developed a high fever that wouldn’t subside. His parents rushed him to the ER of the local hospital. His condition however, rapidly deteriorated, since the child began to experience hallucinations and seizures. Due to the severity of his condition, Dimitris was transferred to the PICU of a hospital in Thessaloniki. There, he was subjected to a series of tests, which revealed extensive lesions to the brain that were caused after contracting a type B influenza. When the doctors gave the results to Dimitris’ parents, they lost the ground under their feet. Their little boy had suddenly found himself fighting for his life, while having sustained irreversible brain damage.
The little boy had to remain hospitalized for 4 whole months, while he was later transferred to a rehabilitation center of the city of Larissa, where he remained for one and a half years. 3 years ago, Dimitris was discharged and returned home, which is located in the city of Serres. The 13-year-old boy is daily subjected to physiotherapy, since he is presenting with muscular atrophy and spinal deformities. The little guy is unable to move his extremities. He is fed through a gastrostomy. He breathes with the use of a ventilator, while he is often suffering from epileptic seizures.
Little Dimitris’ parents had found themselves in a dead end, and they had made a public appeal through ACT OF KINDNESS. Our Organization took action immediately and after completing 2 consecutive aid campaigns, we managed to cover our little friend’s health-related expenses for the past 2 and a half years.
Today however, little Dimitris’ family is asking for our support once more, since the expenses regarding his care are gradually increasing. Physiotherapy sessions, medical expendable supplies, renting of medical equipment, are just some of the expenses the family has to face on a monthly basis.
Over the past 5 years, little Dimitris and his family are facing an uphill struggle. Today, they need us more than ever. We cannot turn our backs on them. Together, we can facilitate their struggle and stand by them throughout this immense ordeal.
We join forces for little Dimitris!
