Short Story

Theofania is an adorable little girl, who has been diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder which is called pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, and which manifests itself with severe psychokinetic delay and microcephaly. Over the past one and a half years, Theofania is being subjected to an intensive speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy program, while her developmental progress is gradually improving, since she has developed her chewing skills, while she is now able to take a few steps with the help of her physiotherapist.

Theofania is an adorable little girl, who has been diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder which manifests itself with severe psychokinetic delay and microcephaly. When the little girl came into this world, she wasn’t presenting with any health problems, while her parents were excited to welcome the sixth member of their family. As months went by, however, her parents noticed that their little girl’s head wasn’t increasing in size, while she constantly seemed lethargic and tired. They consulted with their pediatrician, who referred them to a genetic testing specialist. The test results, however, were a punch in the gut: pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, a rare metabolic disorder which causes severe psychokinetic delay and microcephaly.

Over the past one and a half years, Theofania is being subjected to an intensive speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy program, while her developmental progress is gradually improving, since she has finally developed her chewing skills, while she is now able to take a few steps with the help of her physiotherapist.

As we can all understand, the child’s health-related expenses have brought the family of six to a dead end, since the child’s treatments are not all covered by the family’s health insurance. Little Theofania’s parents reached out to ACT OF KINDNESS, and thanks to your sensitivity, we managed to cover the cost of the child’s treatments and medical expendable supplies, for one whole year!

Today, however, Theofania’s family is asking for our help one more time, since according to the pediatric neurologists and developmental pediatricians who monitor her condition, the little girl needs to proceed with her treatments, since they are essential for her overall health.
